Join Professor Chepchirchir Tirop (BU), Kamari Clarke (U of Toronto), & Mai Hassa (MIT) for their roundtable discussion on Global Blackness!
About this Event

This roundtable explores the connected political and intellectual worlds of Sudan, the Horn of Africa, and the Nile Basin, and their place in broader traditions of Black internationalism across Africa and its diasporas. The region is usually seen through the lenses of war, famine, and humanitarian emergency. Black internationalism has often recognized injustice abroad by analogy to Jim Crow and apartheid. That habit of seeing makes some struggles legible but leaves others harder to read, such as Sudan’s wars over sovereignty, state power, and political belonging.

This conversation moves from analogy toward encounter, asking how the region’s crises have been historically produced and how people there build livable worlds within and against those histories. Taking the Nile as a counterpart to the Black Atlantic, it treats the region as a source of theory about Global Blackness today.

This event is co-sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology, History, Political Science, and Religion; the Pardee School of Global Studies; the Center for Innovation in the Social Sciences; (CISS) & the Institute on Culture, Religion & World Affairs (CURA),
