Tour + Lecture: The Alliance Colony: Early Jewish Pioneers of South Jersey

We will explore the lives of the early Jewish pioneers and settlers who built a farming community where religious life was deeply connected to the rhythms of agriculture. This is a unique opportunity to visit the shul and experience history from the inside out.

6pm we will walk across the street from Alliance Synagogue to view the newly completed Alliance Mural, and a brief introduction to the Alliance Cemetery. Led by ACRe co-founders Malya and William Levin, art director for the Alliance Mural. (Weather permitting)

7pm we will convene across the street in the historic Alliance Synagogue to attend Josh Cutler's lecture series "The Alliance Colony: Early Jewish Pioneers of South Jersey."

Josh Cutler will have copies of his book The Seventy Shuls: Synagogue Life & Yiddishkeit from the Pine Barrens to the Boardwalk for sale and sigining!

JOSH CUTLER is a Ph.D. student in Holocaust Studies at Gratz College and holds an M.A. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies from Stockton University. Josh has served as Program Director at the Katz Jewish Community Center in Margate, Camp Director of JCC Camp By the Sea, and Executive Director of the Board of Jewish Education of Atlantic & Cape May Counties. When he’s not driving across South Jersey in search of abandoned shuls and remnants of Yiddishkeit, Josh leads tours to lesser known Jewish communities around the world. His newest book, The Seventy Shuls: Synagogue Life & Yiddishkeit from the Pine Barrens to the Boardwalk was published in early 2026 and he is excited to include this stop at the oldest existing synagogue in South Jerey, Tifereth Israel.
