About this Event
New Horizons spotlights exciting duos exploring the limits and boundaries of Indo-Jazz, blending classical roots with contemporary improv.
Amrita is a captivating duo featuring soprano saxophonist Kayla Milmine and tabla player Anita Katakkar. Their music unfolds like a canvas where shapes are formed by rhythmic grooves, the colour is spontaneous improvisation and the texture is an exploration of tone, timber and emotion.
Gandhaar & Dhaivat present a captivating set that seamlessly fuses tradition and innovation — blending the soulful sounds of bansuri and tabla with electronic textures, pads, and infectious grooves. Their dynamic interplay and intuitive musical dialogue create an experience that is both mesmerizing and uplifting, inviting listeners to move, feel, and connect. With remarkable technique and deep chemistry, this duo bridges ancient rhythms and modern soundscapes in a performance that will open your heart and move your spirit.
About the artists
Kayla Milmine
Kayla Milmine loves the new and under-explored sonic possibilities that only the soprano saxophone can offer. Her unique approach has the edginess and brashness of Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell yet also a warmth and thoughtfulness reminiscent of Steve Lacy.
Anita Katakkar
With Indian Scottish roots in multicultural Toronto, Anita Katakkar’s music represents a link between her heritage and community. She is a multi-faceted composing, performing and recording artist, with a focus on North Indian tabla. Anita has studied tabla for over 20 years, in Toronto with composer and musician Ritesh Das, and in California and Kolkata with the celebrated tabla maestro of the Lucknow tradition, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri.
Gandhaar Amin
A young musician from Pune, India, Gandhaar started intensive training in Indian classical music with his father, at the age of 4. With this strong base of a codified form of music, Gandhaar decided to apply the melodic depth of Indian classical music to a modern, urban setting.
Dhaivat Jani
Dhaivat Jani is a Toronto-based, award-winning drummer, tabla player, and composer originally from Ahmedabad, India. His musical journey began at the age of five with a focus on Indian classical music, and after completing a bachelor in Contemporary Music at Humber College, Dhaivat made Toronto his home.
