Mokume gane (“woodgrain metal”) is a Japanese technique used to create a laminate of different colored metals that is carved, twisted, punched and forged to create beautiful swirling patterns reminiscent of wood grain.
Traditionally the laminate (called a “billet”) is fused in a kiln requiring several hours under intense pressure - but Argentium’s unique fusing properties make it possible to bond using only a torch, binding wire and a charcoal block!
In this class students will learn to fuse torch-fired billets to produce rod and sheet, a variety of patterning techniques, how to fabricate with mokume gane and create different effects and accents in their work, resembling inlay, cabochons and more!
We’ll also cover materials prep and how to create dramatic contrast using etching, patinas and different precious and non-precious alloys like shakudo and shibuichi.
Materials kits:
Kits will include pre-made rod and sheet in Argentium + copper to practice patterning, and a variety of burs for patterning.
Cost $80
A la carte materials:
For the billets we fuse in class, students have the option of working in Argentium and copper or bringing their own precious metals (gold, palladium) or other alloys to combine with Argentium.
Guidance on gold/alloys and how much to purchase will be provided to registrants.
Cost: $999 plus materials
**Early Bird pricing good until 1/31/26!
