“Tony Trischka is known as the father of modern bluegrass” – NY Times.Tony Trischka is considered the consummate banjo artist and one of the most influential Banjo players in the roots music world. For more than 50 years, his stylings have inspired a whole generation of bluegrass and acoustic musicians with the many voices he has brought to the instrument. He, in turn, was profoundly inspired by the genius of Earl Scruggs.
Tony will be honoring Earl, pioneer of a unique three-finder banjo style, and one of the two most important figures in bluegrass…the other being Bill Monroe.
Recently, Trischka was given extremely rare recordings of jam sessions featuring Scruggs and John Hartford. He’s transcribed many of Scrugg’s note-for-note solos from these jams, most of which Earl had never recorded.
An album of this music is now in production with a new label, formed by the founders of Rounder Records. The project includes a number of bluegrass luminaries.
Together with his ace band, Tony will trace Earl’s story from his childhood to his final years. The show debuted at Joe’s Pub in New York City, drawing lots of interest, including an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, a rarity for a banjo player these days.
“Earl is my North Star, a lifetime pathway. And I’m not alone,” says Trischka, a banjo innovator and educator who has influenced everyone from Béla Fleck to Steve Martin. “Through his music, this shy kid from Flint Hill, North Carolina went on to enrich countless thousands of lives. At the age of 13, when I first heard 16 notes of Scruggs style banjo playing, I put down my folk guitar and mercilessly pestered my parents to buy me a banjo. Once it was in my hands, that 5-string became my obsession and has been for 60 years.”
He adds, “The depth of Earl’s genius becomes ever more apparent when I transcribe his solos, which I’ve been doing my entire life and with renewed vigor. Discovering new twists and turns in his playing is pure joy and in fact the inspiration for this tribute show and the album.
Tony will be joined by grammy award winning bluegrass performer, Woody Platt. Woody has always found a home in music and in the water. He has been blessed with the opportunity to successfully follow his passion for music and being a champion for the rivers and streams of Western North Carolina.
A founding member of Steep Canyon Rangers, Woody has won numerous awards collaborating with the likes of Steve Martin, Del McCoury, and Jerry Douglas. In 2018, Woody and the Rangers were inducted to the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
