About this Event

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the world’s biggest theatrical events and always an event characterized by iconic 100-foot balloons, whimsical floats, and character costumes that act as the ultimate street theater.

The parade we now—and what the whole world tunes into to see—was the vision of Tony Sarg, a prolific toy designer, illustrator, and puppeteer who served as the first creative director for the Macy’s event.

The charismatic Darin Johnson, Artistic Director of the American Theater for Puppetry Arts, and a Tony Sarg scholar, reveals the creative life of Sarg in an evening of storytelling, historic photos, and even a thrilling, live marionette demonstration.

Come meet Johnson as he relates the life of a man who changed the meaning of Thanksgiving, and revel in the joy and drama that puppets can convey.
