About this Event
Tom Short: I Get ChatGPT to Write My Edinburgh Show
Plus support from Ross Preston, Sarah Kettel and Bekki Cleland
What happens when a comedian hands over the reins of their Edinburgh Fringe show to artificial intelligence?
Award-winning comedian and University of Salford comedy lecturer Tom Short is about to find out.
In this brand-new work-in-progress for the Edinburgh Fringe, Tom attempts the ultimate comedy experiment: allowing ChatGPT to help create his show live in front of an audience. Armed with audience suggestions, AI prompts and over a decade of stand-up experience, Tom explores the strange relationship between technology, creativity and what it actually means to be funny.
Can a machine write comedy? Will artificial intelligence replace comedians? Or will it simply confirm that humans are still the best at making terrible life choices?
Expect stand-up, audience interaction, unexpected twists, and a unique behind-the-scenes look at how comedy is created in the digital age. Every performance has the potential to be different as Tom battles with the algorithm in real time.
Tom Short is the winner of the Keep It Fringe Award, a Leicester Square Sketch-Off finalist, North West Comedy Awards nominee, and lecturer in Comedy Writing and Performance at the University of Salford. His previous work has been praised as "Tommy Cooper-esque" and "one to watch" by critics.
The evening also features a fantastic full support line-up:
- Ross Preston
- Sarah Kettel
- Bekki Cleland
