Across six decades, 29 albums, and three Grammy Awards, Hudson Valley troubadour Tom Chapin has carved out a remarkably varied creative life. A recording artist, concert performer, storyteller, and activist, he has also worked on Broadway and in television, radio, and film. Born into a family steeped in the arts, Chapin began performing professionally in the early 1960s with his brothers Harry and Steve as The Chapin Brothers. His music appeared in the 1970 documentary Blue Water, White Death, filmed during a six‑month expedition across the Indian Ocean. In 1971, he began a five‑year run as host of ABC News’ Emmy- and Peabody-winning Make A Wish. His 2025 release, The Make A Wish Songbag, revives songs he recorded in 1976 for the show, including the beloved “Circle.”
Chapin launched his solo career with 1976’s Life Is Like That, establishing his reputation as a gifted storyteller and natural entertainer. In 1988, he released Family Tree, the first of 13 acclaimed family albums that earned five Grammy nominations and helped define a new space between toddler music and teen pop, offering thoughtful, life‑affirming songs embraced by kids, parents, and teachers. His creative reach extended to Broadway (Pump Boys and Dinettes), off‑Broadway (Cotton Patch Gospel, Harry Chapin: Lies and Legends), and hosting National Geographic Explorer. He contributed satirical songs to NPR’s Morning Edition and appeared in Jonathan Demme’s The Manchurian Candidate. His children’s books—This Pretty Planet, Library Song, and The Backwards Birthday Party—along with his Grammy‑winning spoken‑word narrations, further broadened his impact.
Upcoming projects include Grandfather Camp: An Orchestral Fantasy, created with John Forster and inspired by Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and his 2026 album Songs of Hope, featuring contributions from The Chapin Sisters, John McCutcheon, Michael Mark, Jon Cobert, and more. A longtime advocate for environmental causes, hunger relief, and arts education, Chapin continues to follow his curiosity: writing songs, performing widely, and celebrating the joy of creation across generations.
