Otsego 2000's popular historic preservation walking tour series continues, with a look at the architecture and history of the Hamlet of Toddsville.
Toddsville sits on Oaks Creek, which in the 1800s powered paper and cotton mills there. The tour will highlight how the desirability of a mill seat and the wealth mills produced allowed families like the Todds to build in fashionable styles like the Greek and Gothic Revival. Participants also will learn how property owners today continue to invest in the historic landscape to keep the rural past alive.
The tour will be led by Dr. Cindy Falk, associate dean of Graduate Studies at SUNY Oneonta and Professor of Material Culture at the University's Cooperstown Graduate Program. Dr. Falk was co-editor of of Buildings & Landscapes: The Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum for five years and is the author of Barns of New York: Rural Architecture of the Empire State.
The cost for the walking tour is $10. Please sign up in advance. The tour will last about 90 minutes, and will include walking on uneven surfaces.
