“To Taste Life Twice” Writing Seminar at The Community Library
Writing Workshops with Esteemed Idaho writers May 16-18, 2024
KETCHUM, IDAHO – "We write to taste life twice, in the moment
and in retrospection… to record the journey … to expand our world,” writes Anaïs Nin, celebrated author, essayist, and diarist. Such is the inspiration for the upcoming 3-day seminar for readers and writers at The Community Library in Ketchum. The second annual seminar, titled To Taste Life Twice, will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, in partnership with the Boise-based organization Story Forward.
"We’re thrilled for the second year of this seminar after a wonderful inaugural year in 2023,” says Martha Williams, the library’s director of programs and education. “Last year we had writers from around the valley learn from incredible Idaho writers, meet others, and share their stories. Writers at every stage, from explorers to full-time career writers, joined us. We have a great community of writers here in Central
Idaho, and this is an opportunity to come together, around story.”
"We're incredibly excited at Story Forward to be collaborating with The Community Library and the Wood River Valley community for a second year of To Taste Life Twice,” says Christian Winn, who will also lead a workshop during the seminar. “It's so wonderful to be able to work with really talented and enthusiastic writers from the valley, the Boise area, and all across southwest Idaho over the course of a long writerly weekend. Story Forward and myself as a teaching writer are honored and grateful to be working with Martha and the Community Library team to bring great fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction to emerging and seasoned writers who truly love the art and craft of story building in all its forms. This second year of Taste Life Twice is going to be really special and amazing, and Story Forward is incredibly lucky to be a part of the literary fun! See you at TTLT!"
The opening keynote on Thursday, May 16, at 5:30 p.m., will feature best-selling author Jess Walter, a National Book Award finalist and winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Award. Walter is the best-selling author of seven novels, including Beautiful Ruins andThe Cold Millions, as well as two books of short stories and one nonfiction book. His work has been translated into 34 languages, and his fiction has been selected three times for Best American Short Stories, as well as the Pushcart Prize and Best American Nonrequired Reading. The event is free and open to the community, but pre-registration is required to save a seat.
Throughout Friday and Saturday, the community can take part in writing workshops with Idaho authors: Beginnings with Anna Caritj; How to Tell Your (Nonfiction) Story with Kim Cross; Unf*ck Yourself: Storytelling for Liberation with tai simpson; Making the Past Present with Christian Winn; and Curating Life and Truth: How to Write a Compelling Story with Alan Heathcock. Workshops are limited to 15 participants each and are open to all levels of writers. Registration is required.
Saturday morning will kick off with a drop-in Writers Roundtable discussion with the five workshop instructors, who will share and answer questions about their writing
lives and practices. Coffee and light pastries will be served.
The event culminates in a Storytelling Event in the Library’s Lecture Hall on Saturday, May 18, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All attendees and the public are invited to
hear readings from participants, instructors, and special guests. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
