About this Event
Every Thursday, Artichoke Community Music hosts the Thursday Night Coffeehouse Showcase—an evening of up to four local and touring artists in an intimate listening-room setting.
Curators such as the Portland Folk Music Society and Portland Songwriters Association select the performers, who generously donate their sets to support Artichoke’s mission.
Audience tips go directly to the musicians. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and light snacks are available at the bar.

Dan Lowe
Although he primarily writes for the Country market and Film and TV, Dan describes himself as a 'Roots/Americana' artist. His music is eclectic, interweaving elements of rock, country, folk, jazz, the blues, and R & B. When asked what makes his music unique, Dan says, “It's taking all of the above and blending them into something that I typically perform on solo acoustic guitar!” While he is currently based in Portland, Oregon, Dan typically bounces between there and Nashville, Tennessee.
"I was born and raised in Alaska, where I got swept up in Beatlemania and the British Invasion at an early age," Dan says in describing his background. "My love for all kinds of music propelled me to learn any instrument I could get my hands on, although I concentrated heavily on the piano and guitar - as they were the primary tools used in songwriting, which became my obsession. I really believe that my love of music - in all forms - is what has kept my own both timeless and contemporary."
Along the way, Dan has won several awards and honors as both a songwriter and a performer, but his current pride and joy is his new album, "No Running From The Storm (Songs Of Life, Love, And Loss)" by Dan Lowe & The Skeletal Remains!
Ron Shaffer
Ron Shaffer is an award-winning songwriter who’s been featured on such shows as "Evening Becomes Eclectic" on KCRW. His song, “New Haircut,” is on the Portland Songwriters Association Best of compilation. And, his latest record, "Broken Windows," has gotten radio airplay around the world and is available wherever music is streamed. He’s had several songs recorded by other artists, including co-writing David Unlayao’s recent release, “If You Weren’t Leaving Too,” as well as John Colbert’s, “Broken Windows” and “Can’t Always Tell.” His songs have been signed to publishers in LA, NY, and Nashville.
James Kehn
James Kehn started music at the age of fourteen. He has recorded,
performed and toured professionally throughout his career. He
has been in all types of groups (from duos to orchestras),
performing a myriad of musical styles, along the way working
with well known musicians and actors. James is accomplished
on several instruments, as well as song writing and musical
composition. His focus today remains writing, recording, and
performing.
Arlie Conner
Arlie Conner has a degree in music composition from the U of
Oregon, that and $8 will get you a nice cuppa these days!
Hah, seriously, he now has 9 albums of original material and
will hope to entertain you, with stories, political satire and
perhaps a new love song or two. Fresh from a production of
his vampire comedy musical, he now is working on Love
Songs Volume 2. He has won an award for lyrics, and writes
in my different genres. His heroes include Pete Townshend,
Tom Waits, John Hiatt and Bryan Ferry.
