The purpose of this part of the TMJ education module is to familiarize/review the normal biomechanics of the TMJ as well as the pathomechanics involved in a displaced disc.
At the end of this module, the learner should be able to:
Describe the anatomy involved in the motions of the jaw including depression and elevation, protrusion and retrusion and lateral deviation.
Describe the normal biomechanics of the TMJ
Describe the current theory of mastication
Identify the movement patterns associated with the abnormal pathomechanics with a displaced disc with and without reduction
Describe some of the Mechanisms of Injury for TMD
The purpose of this part of the TMJ education module is to familiarize/review the anatomy of the TMJ in preparation for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of TMJ related disorders.
At the end of this module, the learner should be able to:
Recognize the muscles of the TMJ including the hyoid and tongue
Identify the branches of the Trigeminal Nerve and what it supplies
Identify the sinuses in the facial area including the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid and sphenoid
The purpose of this part of the TMJ education module is to familiarize/review the anatomy of the TMJ in preparation for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of TMJ related disorders.
At the end of this module, the learner should be able to:
Recognize the bony anatomy of the TMJ
Identify the ligamentous and capsular structures around the TMJ
Describe the blood and nerve supply to the TMJ
Identify the rudimentary malpositions of the jaw including retro and prognathism, overjet, overbite and crossbite
Practical Assessment, Palpation and treatment techniques will be reviewed
