De Nederlandse Antillen dragen allemaal de erfenis van de Nederlandse kolonisatie en slavenhandel. De huidige bevolking is een mix van de oorspronkelijke indianen, Afrikaanse slaven en Europese heersers, en dat vind je terug in de muziek. Maar die muziek is op ieder eiland toch net weer verschillend.
Tipiko maakt aanstekelijke zonnige Afro-Curaçaose en Bonairiaanse muziek. De gemene deler is de grote Afrikaanse invloed in de muziekstijlen.
Qua instrumenten is er uiteraard zang, naast kleine snaarinstrumenten zoals de cuatro en de mandoline, handgeklap en percussie. En qua percussie zijn het niet alleen conga’s, maar ook de bari (een traditionele trommel) en instrumenten als de wiri (een metalen rasp), koebel en chapi (eigenlijk het ijzeren blad van een hak of schep). Die stammen uiteraard nog uit de slaventijd, want tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen hadden immers weinig tot geen instrumenten tot hun beschikking en bespeelden daarom de weinige voorwerpen die wél voorhanden waren.
In de muziek zijn duidelijk de Afrikaanse invloeden en ritmes nog te horen, zoals zang en tegenzang, en polyritmiek, waarbij diverse deelritmes moeiteloos in elkaar klikken en nieuwe ritmes vormen.

Sunny music from the Dutch Antilles
The Netherlands Antilles all bear the legacy of Dutch colonization and slave trade. The current population is a mix of the original Indians, African slaves and European rulers, and that is reflected in the music. But that music is still slightly different on each island.
Tipiko makes catchy sunny Afro-Curaçaoan and Bonairean music. The common denominator is the great African influence in the music styles.
In terms of instruments, there is of course singing, in addition to small string instruments such as the cuatro and the mandolin, hand clapping and percussion. And in terms of percussion, it is not only congas, but also instruments such as the bari (a traditional drum), the wiri (a metal scraper), cowbell and chapi (actually the iron blade of a hoe or shovel). These of course date back to the slavery period, because enslaved Africans had few to no instruments at their disposal and therefore played the few objects that were available. The music clearly shows African influences and rhythms, such as singing and counter-singing, and polyrhythms, in which various sub-rhythms effortlessly click together to form new rhythms.
