Atlanta-based musician Tinsley Ellis, long celebrated as one of the finest electric blues-rock guitarists of his generation, has now earned equal praise as a leading contemporary acoustic blues artist. His 2024 album Naked Truth—a Blues Music Award nominee—marked his first acoustic release, blending powerful originals inspired by Son House, Skip James, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters with a handful of reimagined covers. His new album Labor Of Love delivers 13 raw, self-produced originals filled with emotional grit—songs of floods, fire, spirits, struggles and prayers. From the feral “Hoodoo Woman” to the John Lee Hooker–style “Long Time,” the Skip James–inspired “To A Hammer,” and the stomping “Sunnyland,” Ellis fully inhabits each track.
Drawing on four decades of touring, Ellis channels deep experience and hard-earned wisdom. Time spent in Bentonia, Mississippi with blues legend Jimmy “Duck” Holmes further shaped the album’s sound. Using multiple open tunings on vintage Martins and a National Steel—and even mandolin for the first time—Ellis finds endless inspiration. Touring solo, he continues to tap the pure essence of acoustic blues.
