Minimum Age: None (all attendees under 12 must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult)
Maximum Age: None
Summary: Tinker Time is the STEM Action Center's weekly unstructured makerspace opportunity. If you have a personal project to work on, the STEM Action Center has the equipment to help you achieve your goals. STEM Action Center staff and volunteers are available to help you log into software and ensure safe use of the machines, but the intention of Tinker Time is to allow personal exploration and discovery; STEM AC staff are not responsible for idea generation for projects or behavior management of participants.
Participants must be 12 years or older to attend Tinker Time independently. Participants younger than 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Adults must be aware that they are responsible for all students younger than 12 throughout the duration of their Tinker Time experience. If adequate supervision of students in a party is not observed, attendees may be asked to leave.
If you are interested in learning a specific skill in a structured format (like 3D printing, laser cutting, milling, etc.) check out our other events on Eventbrite or talk to a STEM Action Center staff.
What equipment is available at Tinker Time?
Typically, our BambuLab A1 Mini 3D printers, BambuLab X1C 3D printer, Epilog Fusion Edge 12 laser cutter, Sawgrass SG1000 Sublimation Printer, Janome 1522-DG Sewing Machines, Cricut Air, Cricut Maker, and materials from our prototyping shelves are available for use on a weekly basis. To use these pieces of equipment independently, participants must attend and pass the beginner certification courses offered on a monthly basis on Wednesday evenings. If you have not attended a class, a Hub team member must be present to assist you while using the tools.
Some pieces of equipment, like the CNC Router, CNC Mill, and woodworking or metalworking saws may be available if requested but should not be counted on for use during Tinker Time hours due to safety or noise concerns. To inquire about use of these tools, please contact [email protected].
It’s important to remember that the Innovation Hub is a community space used by many different people almost every day of the week. Due to machines being constantly used, there are times when some pieces of equipment might be unavailable due to required maintenance or repairs. While we try our hardest to keep the machines running and available during Tinker Time, the availability of machines may be outside of our control as we wait for required repairs or replacement parts. We appreciate your understanding
