The Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9) will feature Rochelle Vega with “Time and Texture” as part of the April First Friday art tour, Friday, April 3rd, 6-9pm. Vega will also host an open house at FC9 on Sunday, April 12th, 12-4pm. Admission and parking are free for both events. “Time and Texture” embodies mixed-media artist Vega’s processing of her grief, mourning the loss of a dear friend last October, Jessica Hackler Shipley. Vega remarks that she’s never experienced a loss so great, feeling discouragement by how low her heart had sunk, forcing her into a time of quiet and isolation.
“I will allow myself this time,” Vega said. “This time to heal while still holding tight to her memory. I do fear the day that I can no longer hear her laugh in my head. I had really dived into adding textural elements into my work last year and Jess was here for it, pushing me to squash doubt and making me feel like the coolest person. When I look at my work since that day, I see grief manifesting and releasing. Art has been my respite. The cloud of doubt and questioning the worth of my work has retreated and left artistic abandon in its place.”
About Rochelle Vega
The Russiaville native and Ball State English literature grad is pretty upfront about her background, not just as an artist, but as a human.
“I began seriously and consistently painting in 2017, which coincides with my sobriety date, July 17th, 2017,” Vega said. “Hi, I’m Rochelle and I’m an alcoholic. I’m very loud and proud about my recovery from active alcoholism.
Vega often feels her emotions in colors, and it is therapeutic for her to get those colors onto a canvas. She works quickly, but goes with the flow, embracing whatever forms that present themselves into the paint. It’s fitting, then, that most of Vega’s work is abstract in the fluid-pour technique, while also mixing in textures, such as moss, netting, various glues, and paper. For this show, Vega will also showcase a collection of uniquely-decorated hats, each expressing more of her personal voice.
“I find this very much mirrors the human experience, at least, my human experience. I have had many plans and visions of and for my life…They rarely seem to go to plan, and I find myself continually working with what happens to be before me. In art and in life, I am flying by the seat of my paints,” Vega said.
While this show will feature abstracts built around the fluid pour technique, Vega mixes her paint with various additional additives to achieve the desired consistency for the piece. She has also recently expanded her repertoire over the last year to include mixed media, collage, and printmaking. She especially loves creating botanical prints with cuttings from her garden.
