About this Event
Tile Making Workshops at Gainsborough Old Hall
Dates: 1st, 8th, 15th and 21st February
Time: 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm (8th is only 1pm-3pm)
Join us for an exciting opportunity to contribute to Gainsborough Old Hall’s future by making your own ceramic tile for an art installation! Ceramic artist Jen Holtridge (she/they) will be facilitating a series of tile making workshops at this beautiful medieval building in the heart of Gainsborough, a chance to get hands-on with the community dig findings and the architectural designs of the Hall.
Each participant can make a tile based on the Old Hall's patterns and/or the Community Dig findings. Once you have made a tile, Jen will then fire in the kiln and add it to a triptych art piece, mounted on a wooden frame. This artistic piece of all the tiles will then be displayed in the Old Hall and travel to schools and other community spaces.
No previous experience is needed for the workshops—just plenty of curiosity and enthusiasm. This is a unique opportunity to be part of uncovering contribute meaningfully to a community artwork displayed in Gainsborough Old Hall—come along and make tiles with us!
What You Need to Know:
- Places are limited to just 12 participants per session, so booking early is essential.
- Please wear sensible clothing: ideally knees covered, and clothes you don’t mind getting potentially mucky.
- Anyone under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
What to Expect:
Working Jen Holtridge (she/they), we’ll be exploring areas around the Hall to uncover architectural features, sketching motifs and handling replicas and findings from the Community Dig. Each participant will select one of the symbols, motifs, or archaeoligcal materials to design a tile. Then, there will be a quick demonstration from Jen on how to make the tiles and you can make one yourself using your design! No previous experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to get your hand dirty with clay!
Please give us 24 hours' notice if you can no longer attend. If you have any questions please email [email protected]
