A roundtable and discussion on family migration policies, the impact of Brexit, reunification pathways for refugees, and more.
About this Event

This roundtable discussion on family migration in the UK will feature scholar Katharine Charsley, charity leaders Matteo Besana and Caroline Coombs, choreographer and scholar Sharon Watson MBE and journalist Anna Lekas Miller, to reflect on the multiple ways current family migration policies and the future plans presented in Shobana Mahmood's “A Fairer Pathway to Settlement” harm cross-border families and create a more hostile environment for UK citizens, especially racialized one. The roundtable discussion will consider the perspectives of family migrants and UK citizens married to foreign spouses, family reunification pathways for refugees, the impact of Brexit, and how media and artistic representation can help us reflect the complexities of cross-border family lives and platform voices that are often silenced.

A photographic and textual exhibition will be held in conjunction with the event at the Storytelling Cafe between 13-28 March, enabling family lives to come to the fore and showcasing some of the poetic work produced through an online book club for people with experience of family migration.

As changes to the related legislation are currently being considered, the event enables MSPs and the wider public to hear from experts and affected individuals and make informed decisions about the future of family life in the UK.

This is a free event, which means we overbook to allow for no-shows and to avoid empty seats. While we generally do not have to turn people away, this does mean we cannot guarantee everyone a place. Admission is on a first come, first served basis.
