Volunteer Garden Crawl: Help Erirene Farms maintain Blackshear Elementary School, grow food and support this garden. April 16 • 5–8 PM
About this Event

Join Harlem River Farms for our weekly Thursday Garden Crawl—a hands-on volunteer experience where we work together to maintain and improve community gardens across Houston.

This week, we’re supporting Erirene Farms at Blackshear Elementry School, one of Houston’s historic community garden spaces.

Arrival Instructions:

  • Please park in the Teacher Parking Lot (Ennis St side).
  • This is a secured campus with restricted gate access.
  • Call or text upon arrival for entry assistance:
  • 832-714-2164

🌱 What This Is:

This is a working volunteer session, not just a tour.

We’ll be actively helping with:

  • Garden maintenance
  • Planting and harvesting
  • Bed preparation and cleanup
  • General improvements to the space

🛠️ What You’ll Do:
  • Get your hands in the soil
  • Work alongside community members and growers
  • Contribute directly to local food production
  • Help strengthen a shared community resource

🌿 What You’ll Gain:
  • Hands-on gardening experience
  • Practical growing knowledge you can use at home
  • A deeper connection to the Third Ward community
  • The opportunity to be part of something meaningful

💡 Why This Matters:

Community gardens like Blackshear Elementry require consistent care to thrive.

By volunteering, you’re helping:

  • Increase local food production
  • Support neighborhood access to fresh food
  • Strengthen community ownership of shared spaces

This is part of our broader effort to build a more sustainable, community-driven food system in Houston.

Agenda
About our Sponsor

Info: The Third Ward Cultural District is a community-driven initiative established in 2020 by the Texas Commission on the Arts to preserve, celebrate, and activate the rich cultural legacy of Houston’s historic Third Ward.

Managed by Project Row Houses, the district focuses on using arts, culture, and community engagement as tools for healing, connection, and economic opportunity.

Rooted in one of Houston’s most historically significant Black communities, the district builds on a legacy that includes Juneteenth celebrations at Emancipation Park and generations of Black creativity, entrepreneurship, and cultural leadership.

Today, the organization works to:

Activate public spaces through art, events, and cultural programming

Support local artists and creatives with opportunities to thrive

Strengthen community connections across residents and visitors

Preserve Third Ward’s cultural identity amid ongoing change
