His honors include Magazine Photographer of the Year, White House Photographer of the Year, and recognition from the Smithsonian Institution. In recent years, he has returned to England, Hungary, and Romania to photograph Roma (Gypsies) he firstmet in 1969—many of them children then and now grandparents reinforcing a lesson he has learned overtime: photographs have a life of their own, growing in meaning as the years pass.
