Our November MAAWA Meeting.
Graeme Henderson | Patrick Baker | Trevor Winton
• 50 Years on James Mathew Site
The wreck lies in 2-3m of water, 100m from shore. The site was excavated by WA Museum mid-1970s. After each field season the site was backfilled with surrounding sediment, and remained buried until the late 1990s, when researchers noted exposed timbers from the shipwreck were heavily degraded.
• The growth of MAAWA
The Maritime Archaeological Association of Western Australia (MAAWA) was created in 1974 to research, record, and protect underwater cultural heritage. Over five decades, it has partnered with the Western Australian Museum on landmark projects like the Rottnest Island Shipwreck Trail and modern 3D site documentation. Relive its journey and share in its future.
• The Development of world-class underwater survey techniques.
From manual depth sounding into high-tech acoustic and digital mapping systems. Key milestones include multibeam sonar, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and underwater photogrammetry, hear more at our November meeting.
