Three Hundred Trees Ceremony September 28, 11am: we will have a short ceremony to thank the volunteers who have been working so hard along the stream. Includes light refreshments and an unveiling of two new signs teaching people about riparian buffers (streamside plantings). This marks the milestone of planting a total of 380 trees and a total of more than 1,000 trees and shrubs along the entire length of Rock Creek where it flows through Curtis.
This volunteer crew has worked tirelessly to
- Remove large vines that suffocate trees and remove tenacious plants like knotweed that prevent a diverse and healthy ecosystem
- Repopulate with more than 380 trees and many bushes, ferns, and other plants
Fence the plantings to keep them safe from deer while they are babies
- Encourage native plants and wildflowers to grow here again
Hand water all new plantings during hot summer droughts. (Did you know a gallon of water weighs eight pounds? They sure do!)
The baby trees and the rest of the stream still need love and attention to keep them healthy and growing, and more work is planned, but the progress so far is quite an achievement!
