About this Event
This event was postponed from September 20 to December 6.
Join huiyin zhou for a workshop exploring the intimate interplay between text and image. We will look at examples of different artists’ work that interweaves personal writing with photography, with a focus on queer kinship, diaspora, and memory work. Participants will learn techniques for crafting personal stories through generative prompts and hands-on practice. Participants will leave with pieces of text + image art they create.
Bring 3-6 physical photos you feel connected to, whether from personal archives, family albums, or found objects (copies are encouraged). We will provide other materials for writing, crafting, and collaging. If you require these photos to be printed, feel free to email them to Danny Peña at [email protected] at least 2 days prior to the workshop.

About the instructor
Born and raised in the industrial hub of Dongguan, China, huiyin zhou 徽音 (they/ta/她) is a transnational queer feminist organizer and community-based photographer, writer, multimedia artist and cultural producer. A diasporic bird constantly up- and re-rooting themselves, they are currently based in Durham, NC, and NYC. They work with digital and analog photography, text, installation, and performance with a relational, reciprocal praxis. Creating with intimate and tender sensibilities, huiyin explores themes related to queer feminism, intimacy, memory, diaspora, and community building. They are currently a studio artist at Queen Street Magic Boat, a surrealist artist-led space.
