In an illustrated talk Jenny Uglow examines Bewick’s life and work, from his childhood on the Tyne to his Newcastle workshop and growing fame – a passionate, forthright Northumbrian genius.

About the Speaker
A former editorial director of Chatto & Windus, and previous Chair of the Council of the Royal Society of Literature, Jenny Uglow is a biographer and historian. Her award-winning books include The Lunar Men: The Friends Who Made the Future, In These Times: Living in Britain through Napoleon’s Wars and Edward Lear: A Life of Art and Nonsense. As well as Thomas Bewick she has written on artists including William Hogarth, Walter Crane, Quentin Blake, and the lino-cutters Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power. Her current book is on the 18th century naturalist Gilbert White of Selborne.
