This is What We Mean by Short Films: Opening Night 2024

Kick off the summer right with one of Rooftop’s biggest and best short film programs of the season! Tunnel through life with us, under the stars at Green-Wood Cemetery, and bathe in absurdist worlds made up of pennies, car washes and personality tests. Watch as siblings’ bonds get tested and artists confront their self doubts in imagined gardens. Go on the journey with frazzled assistants and bubbly conspiracy theorists as they suck people down the drain with them. Each film in this program will show you exactly what we mean by short films.

FILMS

Personality Test

Justin Jinsoo Kim | South Korea, US | 8 min

A private memory is examined and explored through a simple personality test found on the internet.

Soft Touch

Paige Mazurek | US | 11 min

An existential bubble bath caught between past, present and daydream, Soft Touch reconsiders how we move through the tunnel of life.

The Garden of Heart

Olivér Hegyi | Hungary, Slovakia | 11 min

A nervous painter-to-be has to overcome his own demons during the university entrance exam, which appear as pests in his imagined garden.

Pennies From Heaven

Sandy Honig | USA | 11 min

"Pennies from Heaven" is a short comedy about two eccentric twin sisters who work at a convenience store and stumble upon a pickup truck full of pennies. It’s an absurdist farce in the middle of the desert and the twins follow the adventure wherever it takes them - only to end up right back where they started.

LA EXPLOSIÓN

Jose San Miguel & Juanma Vargas | Spain | 8 min

José Luis has read a hoax on the internet and decides to gather the entire town to see an “explosion” of household appliances.

Oasis

Justine Martin | Canada | 14 min

Raphaël and Rémi are twins who see their fusional attachment crumble while one of them remains a prisoner of childhood.

Flail

Ben Gauthier & Allie Levitan | USA | 14 min

It's her boss's birthday, and Allie is trying as hard as she can.

Bug Dinner

Phoebe Jane Hart | USA | 7 min

A dissatisfied marriage, a secret crush, and workplace fantasies come to a head in a diner run by a mole with a hot ass.
