About this Event

As part of the ongoing This Is America exhibition, join Charleston’s first and second Poet Laureates for an evening of poetry, storytelling, and conversation exploring identity, belonging, community, and the evolving American story.

Inspired by the powerful response to the exhibition’s opening reception, In Our Own Wordscontinues the dialogue through spoken word, personal reflection, and meaningful conversation. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Marcus Amaker and AsiahMae invite us to consider how our individual stories help shape a nation that is still defining itself.

Through poetry and discussion, these celebrated literary voices will reflect on place, history, culture, and the power of language to help us better understand ourselves and one another.
