Your Topic:

Thinking Without Thinking: Why Your Mind Is Already Made Up

Most of us assume we're in control of our own thinking, but the science tells a different story. This talk dives into the automatic mind: how the brain quietly builds habits of attention and interpretation that shape your choices, your behaviour, and your everyday experience, often beneath conscious awareness. Weaving together psychology, neuroscience, and real-world examples, you will explore what it means to live with greater awareness in a world that rewards speed and multi-tasking. Walk away with fresh perspective on how your mind habits work, and a practical technique to interrupt unhelpful patterns and bring genuine intention back to the moments that matter.

Your Speaker: Associate Professor Maarten Immink

Maarten has dedicated his career to understanding how the mind, body, and environment interact to shape the way people learn, perform, and thrive. A performance scientist, educator, and consultant at Flinders University, his work draws on neuroscience, psychology, and movement science to translate research into meaningful impact for individuals and organisations across sport, health, education, and industry.

He has worked extensively with elite athletic programs including the Australian Cycling Team, Tennis Australia, Cricket SA, and the South Australian Sports Institute, specialising in mental skills training for athletes performing at the highest levels. An internationally recognised public speaker known for making complex neuroscience accessible, engaging, and immediately relevant, Maarten brings both rare scientific depth and a genuine conviction that understanding your own mind can change how you live.
