Michael Mann's remarkable diamond-nabbing neo-noir THIEF, based on a novel by real life jewel thief John Seybold and starring James Caan, Tuesday Weld, James Belushi and Austin icon Willie Nelson, was the director’s debut feature film for cinema yet looks and plays like the work of an old master. Inspired by French cinema legends Jean Pierre Melville and Robert Bresson, Mann's film is all in the detail. It's all about the meticulous attention that Caan's Frank gives to both the tools of his trade and the art of anonymity. Like Mann's later crime epic HEAT, THIEF is fuelled by themes of the procedural and of routine and how those of a criminal are interchangeable with those of a policeman. THIEF is all about mood, minimalist aesthetics and the moody soundscapes of Tangerine Dream - an austere gem from an era of filmic excess in America.
