Thermoforming Textiles: Creating 3D Form with Heat

Discover how heat can permanently transform cloth in this hands-on introduction to thermoforming textiles.
Working with both synthetic and natural fibres, participants will compare how polyester and silk respond differently to heat while exploring techniques to create permanent texture, structure, and pattern. Using a range of Shibori folding, pleating, wrapping, and binding methods, students will manipulate fabric before applying heat to produce three-dimensional surfaces and sculptural forms.
The workshop will introduce dyeing as part of the process, allowing participants to experiment with the relationship between colour, pattern, and form while gaining an understanding of how different materials accept and retain colour.
Through the workshop, participants will develop an understanding of the distinct properties of synthetic and natural fibres, exploring how each material responds to heat and how those differences can be used as creative tools. Participants will also learn about contemporary applications of thermoforming and practical techniques that can be adapted for textile art, fashion, costume, and surface design.
Participants will leave with a collection of experimental textile samples and the knowledge to continue exploring thermoforming techniques in their own practice.
