Overview
You will leave this workshop knowing that you can say "yes, and" while also saying "no, but".
"Yes and" has long been presented as the foundational rule of improvisational comedy. It helps to build scenes and relationships between players in scenes. However, it does not mean that you have to say yes to everything in a scene, especially if what is being offered makes you, the improviser, uncomfortable. A scene would not exist without you, and you matter. This workshop will help improvisers develop ways to assert their own boundaries in scenes ,so that they can feel comfortable and confident to play.
You will leave knowing that you can say "yes and" while also saying "no but". To pivot, pause or stop is always an acceptable choice.
I have been improvising since university where I was part of the Glasgow university improv society, improv teatime. After uni I co-founded my improv group the clap who I have been improvising with since 2018. I have performed in both the Glasgow comedy festival and the Edinburgh internet improv festival . More recently I have preformed with teams as part of the improv cooperative. I have also taken improv courses with the Bristol improv theatre and improvisers such as Pippa Evans and Michelle Gilliam. At university I also somehow managed to write a masters dissertation using improv as a frame work to queer theology and deconstruct heteronormative interpretations of biblical texts
