About this Event
Students and staff of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology in Bournemouth University are delighted to be hosting the 45th Annual Meeting of the Theoretical Archaeology Group and cordially invite you to join us and contribute to the event in December.
TAG45 will be a weekend meeting running from Friday 13th December through to Sunday 15th December. The meeting will be live, face to face.
Meeting Theme
The overarching theme of the meeting is Evolution?, with an emphasis on the interrogative framing of the title. At one level the theme is a nod towards remembering Alfred Russel Wallace, who conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection independently of Charles Darwin. He died at home on the outskirts of Bournemouth in 1913 and was buried in Broadstone Cemetery. At another level the theme prompts the question of whether evolutionary models are still relevant for understanding culture-change through archaeology. And at yet another level the theme raises the matter of changing archaeological practice and where current trends in fieldwork might be taking us: is archaeology as a discipline ‘evolving’?. But the theme should not be seen as a constraint on contributions; it is a starting point! Sessions and papers on any aspect of theoretically grounded archaeology would be welcome.
Location
TAG45 will be based at the Talbot Campus on the north side of Bournemouth, where there is a range of lecture theatres, seminar rooms, exhibition spaces, and social spaces available in close proximity to one another. The conference base will be the Fusion Building (see picture) as this provides most of the space required under one roof, and has catering outlets, display areas, and room for bookstalls; other facilities across the campus will be used as necessary. We expect to have available a ‘quiet space’ and also a ‘family-friendly’ space. The Antiquity Quiz and TAG Party will be held in the Students Union (The Old Fire Station) in the Lansdowne area of Bournemouth, which is convenient for accommodation in the town centre. More information on nearby sites of interest can be found here, whereas travel and accommodation information can be found here.
