September Play Reading:
Title: The Bishop of California
Summary: James Albert Pike had a meteoric rise to become one of the most famous religious figures in mid-century America, an equally spectacular decline during the turbulent San Francisco sixties, and died lost and wandering in the Judean desert in 1969. He was a man who millions looked to for answers but his own life was an unanswered question as he struggled with alcoholism, adultery, and an obsession with publicity, and caused turmoil and pain for the people who loved him. The play asks how well we ever know and understand others, or ourselves.
Playwright bio: Lynn Aylward is an emerging playwright who recently moved from San Francisco via Scotland to New Jersey. She was a long-time member of the Writers Pool at Playground in San Francisco and her short plays have been produced in California, Florida and New York. Her full-length plays have been semi-finalists in the Bay Area Playwrights Festival and the City Lights Theatre (San Jose) Festival. She taught playwriting and directed for Rising Voices, a theater group for incarcerated women in Oakland and is a co-founder of Same Boat Theater, the Bay Area's first eco-justice performance group. Her play “Three Chords and the Truth” was in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2021. Lynn is delighted to be part of The Theater Project and her play "StreetCART" had a reading in May 2024 in the New Play Reading Series.
