The always-busy Werner Herzog has been perhaps marginally less prolific a filmmaker since the pandemic hit, at which time he pivoted somewhat from making movies to writing books. Premiering at the Telluride Film Festival in between publication of his 2022 novel The Twilight World and his 2023 memoir Every Man for Himself and God Against All, his latest documentary feature Theater of Thought examines the human mind, how consciousness works, and the ethics of encroaching technology. Herzog’s restless curiosity (and, of course, memorable philosophizing via voiceover) guide us through this rocky terrain.
