About this Event

Art Workshop information

Welcome to The Writer’s Mark – A Company that celebrates the work of surrealist writers through the mediums of art and performance.

This adult workshop (18+) offers a unique opportunity to deepen your emotional and instinctual connection to your art, making it perfect for artists looking to explore new dimensions of expression and creativity. If you have a particular interest in less known surrealist artists and their process of finding ‘truth’ within their work, or if you are keen to understand more about our second writer – Antonin Artaud, then this is the workshop for you.

As part of our exploration into our second writer – Antonin Artaud, we will be offering a drawing class at the Regency Town House on the same day of our performances (please see Eventbrite link for our performance of FILLE DE MON COEUR).

Format:

The drawing workshop will begin with an introduction to the writer, actor, artist and poet – Antonin Artaud and the significance of his art work in our past, present and future – as you embark on several independent and participatory exercises that explore raw emotion and primal instinct. We will investigate within the work: spontaneity and emotional honesty. There will also be live performance movement that will be the discussion and focal point for some of the session and activities.

Our Artistic Director for The Writer’s Mark, Natasha Higdon, will discuss the ‘essence’ of Antonin Artaud and his value as a: theatre maker, philosopher, artist and writer. The session will also be led by Molly O’Neill (Designer and Researcher for The Writer’s Mark). In collaboration they will take you on a journey of exploration, where technical skill is secondary and access of your subconscious is primary.

“Each line that I trace upon a drawing or that I write in a text represents in my consciousness a bottomless weight to lift because of the resistance of everyone’s consciousness…We are not on the real map of the world.”

Antonin Artaud

All equipment for this workshop will be provided and we will br drawing on the floor, if you would like to bring your own pencils and equipment to sketch on this is also welcomed.

No experience is needed, just an open mind and interest in the subject matter – our writer and stimulus for this session – Antonin Artaud.

Who are the Writer’s Mark?

The Writer’s Mark are a small Brighton based Company that explores surrealist writer’s from our past through art and theatre. Forming in October 2023, this Brighton based Company seeks to delve into the psychology behind each writer to explore the human behind their ideas. Previously, The Writer’s Mark launched at Fabrica, Brighton February 2024; holding an event to celebrate the life and works of existential writer, Franz Kafka. This involved twenty local Sussex artists and performers, who participated in a three hour event of live art installations and live theatre.

Artaud is most famous for his book 'The Theatre and It's Double.' His work has profound impact on the evolution of contemporary theatre to this day, evolving from his observations of cinema, theatre and art. Artaud was indeed banished from the surrealist movement and yet his only produced film 'The Seashell and the Clergyman' is perceived to be the first tangible example of surreal concepts and ideas explored in cinematography.
