About this Event

We are proud to introduce The Write Stuff, a new series at Barnes & Noble Philadelphia created for aspiring authors looking to learn more about navigating the route from writing to publication. The Write Stuff provides advice for writers on a wide range of topics including general writing tips, writing for various genres, finding an agent and getting your work published.

In this installment of The Write Stuff, director of UPenn Press Mary Francis and UPenn authors and will speak about how their books were aquired and published as well as the philosophy and background of the press. The event will conclude with time for questions from the audience.



About UPenn Press and Our Panelists:

A member of the Association of University Presses, the Press today publishes more than 100 new books a year and 22 journals, as well as maintaining an active backlist of more than 3,000 titles. True to its Philadelphia roots, Penn Press is well-known for its distinguished list of publications in American history and culture, including innovative work on the transnational currents that surrounded and shaped the republic from the colonial period through the present, as well as prize-winning publications in urban studies. The Press is equally renowned for its publications in European history, literature, and culture from late antiquity through the early modern period. Penn Press’s social science publications tackle contemporary political issues of concern to a broad readership of citizens and scholars, notably including a long-standing commitment to publishing path-breaking work in international human rights. Penn Press also publishes outstanding works in archaeology, economic history, business, and Jewish Studies in partnership with local institutions

Paul Kahan is an expert on U.S. political, economic, and diplomatic history. He earned his Ph.D. in U.S. history from Temple University and lives outside of Philadelphia with his family. Peter Conn retired from the University of Pennsylvania as Vartan Gregorian Professor of English and Professor of Education and was a member of the graduate groups in the history of art and American civilization. His previous publications include The Divided Mind: Ideology and Imagination in America, 1898–1917, and Literature in America. Pearl S. Buck: A Cultural Biography (Cambridge) was chosen as a “New York Times Notable Book.” The American 1930s: A Literary History was published by Cambridge in 2009

For Standing Room-Only Tickets: Limited quantity is available and will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Purchase of a ticket guarantees entrance to the event for the discussion and signing. Ticket holders will be granted a standing view from behind the seated audience -- some views may be more limited/obstructed than others.
