The World Famous Utah LDS Country Dance returns to West Valley City on January 23rd, and yes, it is still world famous if your world includes Utah County, Salt Lake County, and at least three wards that talk about it in Sunday School.This dance will feature acclaimed country dance instructors Andrew Allred and Kathryn Gamble.

The lesson runs from 7:30 PM to 8:15 PM, and from 8:15 PM until 11:45 PM you can dance everything you just learned, everything you thought you knew, and everything you definitely did not know you could do until someone spun you into it. We will also throw in some line dances, plus optional running around and hopping up and down like we did back when we were Teachers and Mia Maids and energy was unlimited.
A huge thank you to our own Doug Rutherford and Bishop Eastman of the Westlake Ward, Salt Lake Granger North Stake, for the use of this very unique building. If you remember the last time we were there, the cultural hall is surrounded by international flags, which really adds to the feeling that you are dancing your way through the gathering of Israel.
Andrew Allred and Kathryn Gamble have each been country swing dancing for nearly five years and are deeply immersed in the national country swing scene. They travel across the country teaching, mentoring, judging, learning, supporting, and competing at major country swing conventions, then bring all that experience and passion right back home to Utah, where we desperately need it.
They are the owners of Hive City UT Country Swing, a modern country swing company dedicated to teaching high quality, technique driven dancing. Their instruction emphasizes strong timing, rhythm, body mechanics, footwork, and connection, all while keeping the dance floor fun, welcoming, and energetic. You will leave dancing better and possibly rethinking your previous testimony that you had rhythm.
Andrew and Kathryn teach modern country swing at events and dance halls throughout Utah and are deeply committed to growing and strengthening the local dance community. Few things bring them more joy than seeing dancers gain confidence, improve their skills, and actually stop apologizing after every move.
They are also the founders of the Beehive State Country Swing Circuit, the largest country swing competition circuit in Utah. Dancers from across the state compete in a series of events that culminate in the Utah State Country Swing Championship, which will be hosted by Hive City later this summer. Yes, competitive dancing is real, and yes, you can still be humble about it.
Cost of admission: FREE.
Please bring a package of bottled water, soda, or snacks to share. If you cannot bring that, please help with tear down after the dance. If you cannot do that either, just tithe two extra dollars next paycheck and give your bishop and ward clerk a hug. It all works out in the end.
This is a night you will not want to miss. Come learn from the best, dance with friends, and maybe even meet someone who shares your values, your love of country swing, and your willingness to stay out past curfew on a Thursday night. At the very least, you will leave with sore feet, a full heart, and a renewed appreciation for modest athletic footwear.
