The White Death in West Virginia: The History of Fighting Tuberculosis
In partnership with the WVU Campus Read, we’ll explore how West Virginia responded to this devastating disease, once known as the “white death.” Learn about the state’s sanitariums at Hopemont, Pinecrest and Denmar, as well as public health campaigns that brought education, diagnostic technology and treatments to rural communities.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a talk in Health Sciences North, Room 1905, followed by a self-guided tour of the exhibit at the Neal Museum and Health Sciences Library. Neal Museum Curator, Katie Thompson, will be available to answer questions during the tour.
This event is part of the 2026–27 WVU Campus Read series, featuring Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green.
The event is free and open to the public! Learn more: https://exlibris.lib.wvu.edu/news/2026/10/27/thewhitedeath
