The Wedding Present: A Brief Story
The Wedding Present have carved out a unique place in British indie music ever since forming in 1985. Led by David Gedge, the band built a devoted following through honest, rapid-fire guitar music and a refusal to follow the usual industry rules. Along the way they scored eighteen UK Top 40 singles, matched an Elvis Presley chart record with their 1992 Hit Parade series and worked with iconic producers including Steve Albini, Andrew Scheps and Ian Broudie.
Across albums like George Best, Bizarro, Seamonsters, Take Fountain and Going, Going..., the band have shifted from breakneck indie rock to lo-fi pop experiments, lush orchestration and even Eastern European folk influences. Gedge also explored widescreen cinematic sounds through his Cinerama project, which fed back into The Wedding Present’s later work.
The band continue to release ambitious projects, from reimagined albums to documentary films, autobiographical books and the recent 24 Songs singles series. Still fiercely independent and creatively restless, The Wedding Present remain one of the most enduring and inventive UK guitar bands.
