A taste of Japan

Shortly after Japan’s borders opened in the late 1800s, whisky made its way into the country and quickly grew popular. In the early 1900s, a Japanese chemist went to Scotland to learn whisky-making. Over the next century, Japanese-made whiskies became much more popular within Japan, and by the 1980s, there was a thriving market domestically! However, the 1990s saw the market bust. Several distilleries stopped production. This was rather inconvenient for when at Whisky Magazine’s awards in 2001, a Japanese whisky won “Best of the Best”, thereby increasing international demand for Japanese whiskies. Since then, Japanese whisky has grown in popularity worldwide.

Tonight at Metro Liquor, taste and learn about Japanese whiskies, and learn what makes Japan one of the big five whisky-producing countries!
