Merry Christmas? I do not think so!
Join the Falmouth Historical Society on an informative and comical journey to hear how New Englanders did not actually celebrate Christmas until the mid to late 19th century. Using the Society’s c. 1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House, as a backdrop, the pair will share stories about how Christmas evolved into the holiday we love today through literature from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and Falmouth’s own poet Katharine Lee Bates’ “Goody Santa Claus.” From Puritans outlawing Christmas to dubious 19th century Falmouth Congregational ministers frowning upon festivities but secretly supplying gifts for children, this tour is a fun and informative way to celebrate, and learn a little more about our New England predecessors.
Tour participants are welcome to stay for our members day of 3 Days of Wicksmas, taking place that day, 3-5pm.
Registration required as there is limited availability.
Museums on the Green Members-Only. Recommended for children 12+, free.
