Brisbane indie rockers The Valery Trails bring their Winter Palace album launch tour to Thornbury, joined by Murphnick Duo and Baker, Mellonie & AdamsAndrew Bower (vocals/guitars), an expatriate Australian then living in Houston, enlisted his brother Sean Bower (bass) and Dan McNaulty (drums) in his hometown of Brisbane, Australia to form The Valery Trails in 2011. With the assistance of the internet and some intercontinental travel, the trio developed a set of songs started in Andrew's home studio into the band's debut album Ghosts and Gravity, released in 2012.
Albums released in 2014 (Buffalo Speedway) and 2016 (Chameleon Bones), to differing degrees also involved long distance recording and exchanges of ideas but when Andrew moved back to Brisbane in 2020 the band began to operate more conventionally, picking up new members Tim Steward (guitars) and Skye Staniford along the way. The first album for this new expanded lineup was 2022's The Sky is Blue, followed by Winter Palace in 2025.
Murphnick Duo (Nick Murphy and Mandy Kerr) bring the songs of Nick Murphy to an intimate space, highlighting their harmonic textures and melodic colours, and country psych folk flavours. Nick has released 3 solo records since the days of psychadelic rockers The Anyones, garnering huge praise and critical acclaim as well as extensive airplay on ABC and community radio as well as TV soundtracks. Nick's latest release, Strange Ride, was called "Stellar" by Rhythms, and Backseat Mafia described it as a "splendid collection of power pop vignettes that sparkle with vitality".
Baker, Mellonie & Adams are three friends - each significant songwriters in their respective bands (Jeffrey Baker-The Golden Rail, Ben Mellonie-Ten Gallon Head, Mark Adams-Cold Irons Bound) - who’ve decided to collaborate on tunes that suit a more acoustic and 'melancholy' treatment than the louder fare audiences normally expect from them. Each brings songs that reflect their unique individuality, but the bubbling alchemy of their respective styles mixed together makes for a compelling and moving set.
