SAVE THE DATE - More details to follow Join us for the Walk of Awareness—a Call To Action to confront the painful legacy of the Milwaukee Indian Boarding School, which operated for 101 years in Milwaukee, WI. This is more than a walk—it is a movement to uncover the truths about the forced assimilation, cultural erasure, and generational trauma endured by our ancestors. Today, we honor their strength and resilience while learning about the ongoing restoration and growth of Indigenous families through American Indian-controlled education.
By participating in this Walk of Awareness, we confront the unspoken parts of our shared history, allowing us to heal as a community and stand in solidarity with Indigenous families fighting for justice and self-determination.
Our journey begins at 6:45 a.m. with a Sunrise Ceremony, followed by a Water Ceremony, as we set our intentions for healing and truth-telling. We are asking for runners to cover the first 7 miles, relay-style. On our runners arrival at the West Allis Historical Society (8:30am) we will walk along sidewalks, carrying the Eagle Staff and the Every Child Matters flag in honor of the numerous children lost to the Indian Boarding School Institutions. No one is expected to run or walk the entire distance as the run and walk will be relay style. Participants will trade off run/walk responsibilities along the way.
Whether you walk a few steps or a few miles, every step represents a collective commitment to Truth and Healing.
Walkers are expected to arrive at Indian Community School by 12:30 pm., so if you're unable to join the full walk, we encourage you to meet us there at the school! We will gather for a meal, hear from powerful speakers, listen to the voices of students and elders, and each person will have an opportunity to share in a Talking Circle. In honor of those denied their cultural identity, we will host a traditional lacrosse game—a symbol of our enduring resilience in the face of educational systems that sought to erase our communities.
We invite attendees to bring a dish to pass if they would like, as we come together to share a meal and strengthen our bonds as a community.
We need your support! Whether by walking, sponsoring, or simply spreading the word, your involvement is crucial to ensuring these stories are no longer hidden, but serve as a catalyst for change.
Please check back for updates, and let us know if you or your organization would like to sponsor or assist in any way. All are welcome—please note that no dogs are permitted at the event.
