The Guiding Tones, Arēki Trio and Uncle Chipper are teaming up this Wellington Jazz Festival to bring you a triple-header afternoon of swing at the iconic Old St Paul's!
The Guiding Tones is an unconventional jazz trio based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Consisting of Vadim Fong on clarinet, Zylah Vivace on guitar and Joseph Coleman on piano accordion, they bring unique instrumentation and a fresh voice to classic swing repertoire. The group plays a range of material, focusing mainly on swing music à la Duke Ellington, but also branching into jazz manouche and even bebop.
Arēki Trio is also based in Wellington and features Alex Christensen on guitar, Ned Rainey on drums, and Mathieu Ornberg on bass. The trio formed in their first year at Te Kōkī / New Zealand School of Music through their shared studies in jazz, and continue to create music together. The trio plays a range of music, including classic ballads, modern jazz, and atmospheric pieces aiming to create an environment where grooving rhythms and improvisation flow.
This group endeavours to make Uncle Chipper proud through their performance of various elegant jazz tunes. Come along to witness this flock of friends experimenting with collaborative ideas. Max Stopyra will be in attendance, holding down the bass lines. Sascha Hunt will be too, but more in the strumming department. Ranu Wijesuriya and his cymbal (+ kit) will collaborate with the aforementioned Max to groove. Logan Heppell will oversee the department of ivory tickling, while Sylvester Green will add elements of melody at times.
The Wellington Jazz Festival is on 14-18 October.
