CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
& Roles and requirements:
Father (High Tenor): He is overly enthusiastic and makes mistakes often. And I mean often. He tries his best, although his best often ends with a broken wagon, a kidnapped daughter, and him swallowing venom after heroically saving his beloved wife from certain death-by-snake-bite. When his family really needs him, there is nothing he won’t do for them.
Mother (Mezzo-Soprano): A protective mom, barely holding it together. Earnest and easily frustrated, especially by Father and Daughter. Their journey could never function without her there, although SOME people might be too stubborn to admit it. All she wants is a good life for her family – and she’ll fake her death as many times as she needs to along the way.
Son (Soprano): The seven-year-old son of the family. He’s precocious and innocent, and he loves throwing things off the back of the wagon. Often lost in his own world, his least favorite activity is killing animals and his favorite activity is skinny dipping (although he’s never tried it). The rest of his family will be surprised if he successfully makes it to Oregon in one piece.
Daughter (Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano): The teenage daughter of the bunch, she sets out on the trail looking for love. At first intrigued by, then later kidnapped by, McDoon (The Bandit King), Daughter eventually learns the meaning of stranger danger. She loves her family, but god, she can’t stand them (especially her mother). Bold and inquisitive, she’s armed with a little bloodlust and a whole lot of naivete.
Grandpa/Cletus Jones (Baritone): As Grandpa, he is old and crotchety – but perhaps with some secret wisdom about love, family, and lobsters. He loves making crude jokes, to the point where the whole family gets fed up and wishes he did just go to Wisconsin instead. As Cletus Jones, he’s the faithful – if often prone to screwing up – sidekick of the Bandit King. But who knows, perhaps he wants to be a bit more…
McDoon/Everyone Else (Tenor): As McDoon – the Bandit King – the main role of this actor, he’s confident, rebellious, and looking for… love. As Everyone Else, this actor is, well, everyone else. Playing over a dozen roles throughout the show (with many of these being in a single song), this actor will be switching props, clothing, and characters extremely quickly both off and on stage.
