One of the cast members is the Great, Great Grandson of H.G. Wells, the guy who wrote The Time Machine (and predicted a few things about humanity’s future that are... a bit too accurate for comfort). But what if his book wasn’t just a wild imagination exercise? Buckle up, because this group of actors is about to time-travel their way through one of literature’s most iconic stories—and likely mess it up along the way.
Will the cast stick to the script? Will time travel make any sense (spoiler: probably not)? Can anyone explain a paradox without a PowerPoint? Will there be enough Cher?
In this reimagining, The Time Machine: A Comedy, expect the unexpected—because if time travel has taught us anything, it’s that the past, present, and future is just one big mess. Created by the masterminds behind the Hound of the Baskervilles (so you know it’s going to be a good time), this show is ready to leave your mind... somewhere between bewildered and amused.

Synopsis of Play
"The Time Machine" is a humorous and inventive adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic, reimagining the story through the lens of three friends attempting to stage a play about time travel. A direct descendant of Wells uncovers evidence suggesting his great-great-grandfather invented time travel and writes a play to dramatize this discovery, casting himself as the lead. As rehearsals unfold, they realize the time machine prop may be real, leading them on unexpected time-traveling adventures. The production combines eccentric humour, physical comedy, and audience interaction, offering a fresh and comedic take on Wells' work while focusing more on character dynamics than strict adherence to the original novella.
Audition Notes
This show contains audience participation that isn’t scripted, so a level of improvisation is required. All three actors will be playing multiple roles, as themselves. Some of these roles include Frank from Eastenders, Pat from Eastenders, Miss Piggy, Kermit, Meghan Markle and Queen Victoria. All actors must perform this as real as possible and not be afraid of looking stupid on stage.
Actor 1 – Male (Mid 20’s – Mid 30’s) – The technical one in charge of explaining Time Travel and paradoxes. Slightly nerdy, good comic timing, improvisation skills as at one point will have a date on stage with an audience member. Must be able to deliver comedy lines whilst showing real feelings of dread etc.
Actor 2 – Female (Mid 20’s – Mid 30’s) – The wannabe singer. She is desperate to perform her Cher Medley (which she does) so needs to be able to sing. Good comic timing required, and good improv skills especially when needing to persuade an audience member to part with their phone and persuading another to come up on to the stage to make a drawing of Actor 1’s date.
Actor 3 – Male (Mid 30’s +) – The leader of the group and H.G. Well’s Great, Great Grandson. Must have strong improvisation skills and comic timing. Will be required to interact with the audience throughout the piece, much of which isn’t scripted. Takes charge in some aspects of the production and does like to slightly mess around but is also dead against Actor 2 performing her Cher medley!
Please note:
• Rehearsals take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening at the theatre from 7:45pm, unless you are notified by of any variances by the director
• Performances are across 2 weeks, starting with the Friday evening, Saturday matinee, Saturday evening of week 1, continuing to Tuesday evening through to Saturday evening of week 2 (the second weekend excludes a matinee performance). You are expected to be available for both show weeks for all rehearsals and performances (unless you have an exceptional arrangement with your director).
• You may be required to provide small props or costumes at your directors' request, but this will be discussed in advance.
• A technical rehearsal is usually held on the Sunday before the run begins.
• If you are successful in your audition, you will be required to become a Full Member of the Rep (if you do not currently have membership) prior to the first rehearsal.
