The Three Edges Challenge is a one-day hiking challenge covering three iconic gritstone escarpments in the Peak District National Park. Bamford Edge, Stanage Edge, and Derwent Edge. This event offers breathtaking scenery and a real sense of achievement.
This is a strenuous circular route with some good elevation.
• Total Distance: Approx 15 km (9.3 miles)
• Total Elevation Gain: Approximately 480m (1,575 ft)
The gritstone edges are rocky, uneven surfaces with some exposure near cliff edges. Peat bogs and potentially boggy sections between Bamford and Stanage with a mix of well-maintained flagstone paths (on Derwent Edge) and rugged, single-track dirt trails. This is classed as an intermediate level hike so some experience and a base level of fitness is required.
The Three Edges
Bamford Edge: A steep initial ascent rewarded by the most famous view in the Peaks, overlooking Ladybower Reservoir.
Stanage Edge: The "King of Edges." A long, atmospheric stretch of gritstone popular with climbers and rich in literary history.
Derwent Edge: Famous for its bizarre and beautiful wind-sculpted rock formations, including the Salt Cellar and the Wheelstones.
The Walk Leaders
The event will be led by Wellbeing Walks trained leaders – Jon and Kaz. Our mission is to get you round safety, but of course have some fun on the way. We know the route well and have carried out a risk assessment and recently walked the route.
To ensure we utilise the best light and allow for a relaxed pace, we adhere to the following schedule:
Meeting & Safety Briefing: 08:00 AM (from Cutthroat Bridge Car Park, A57, Hope Valley S10 4QZ)
Challenge Start: 08:30 AM
Estimated Finish Time: 15:30 PM – 16:30 PM
Note: Times may vary slightly based on group pace and weather conditions.
What to bring
Please refer to the kit list on our website. Bring a full packed lunch, snacks and a large water bottle. Waterproofs and good walking boots essential ( whatever the weather forecast says!)
Recommended Accommodation
We suggest basing yourself near the village of Bamford or Hathersage to minimise travel on the morning of the event. If you want to make it two nights then we will likely go to the LadyBower Inn for food after the walk.
Where to Stay
If you are local then you can just come for the day but if you want to stay over then there are lots of options nearby.
The Ladybower Inn: Situated directly on the return leg of the walk, this 18th-century coaching inn is the perfect "final stop." The Ladybower Inn – Traditional Pub with Rooms
Bike & Boot Peak District Hotel | Dog-Friendly
YHA Hathersage Hostel | Cheap Accommodation Hathersage
The Yorkshire Bridge Inn (Bamford): Yorkshire Bridge Inn, Bamford
We look forward to seeing you there!
