Presentation:
"The Tenuous Republic" by Mike Vance
Explore the dramatic and often uncertain years of the Republic of Texas—from the presidency of Mirabeau B. Lamar through the journey to statehood. In this captivating talk, historian Mike Vance brings to life a critical chapter in Texas history that shaped the state's identity and future.
One consistent theme ran throughout the decade-long Republic of Texas - the nation was always broke. Between the victory at San Jacinto and admission into the United States, Texas struggled to get foreign recognition and to maintain an army, navy and basic government services. Above all, schizophrenic changes in government policy and diplomatic and military pressure from both Mexico and the Comanches led to multiple disasters. All of these themes and more are explored in this lecture by historian Mike Vance. He has researched this period extensively for both books and feature length documentaries, and the Republic period is a prime part of the newest timeline installation at the Brenham Heritage Museum for which Vance did the content. Come see the Tenuous Texas Republic to learn about this fascinating history!
While you're at the museum, don’t miss your exclusive chance to view Sam Houston: Texas Icon, a special exhibit on display for a limited time.
