The Storytellers have established themselves as a creative force in the Southern California roots music scene, delivering a dynamic blend of progressive bluegrass that captivates audiences at every performance. Drawing from the rich traditions of bluegrass, country blues, old-time, and folk music, the band weaves these influences into a tapestry of inspired improvisations and soaring vocal harmonies.
What sets The Storytellers apart is their remarkable musical chemistry—bringing soulful harmonies, delicate acoustic sensibilities, energetic grooves, tight rhythms, and substantive storytelling to every stage they grace. Their distinctive "hippie bluegrass" vibe creates an experience that honors tradition while pushing boundaries.
The band has become a fixture at prominent bluegrass gatherings including the Huck Finn Jubilee, Calico Bluegrass Festival, Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival, and Desert Bluegrass Festival. In 2024, they reached new heights by headlining the prestigious Prescott Bluegrass Festival, and sharing the stage with bluegrass legend Peter Rowan at the Brookdale Bluegrass Festival.
Industry recognition has followed their growing popularity. Legendary folk music promoter Bob Stane observed: "The Storytellers are wonderful singers, and energetic, passionate players. We're thrilled to have them spin their tales on our stage." The Bluegrass Standard noted that "This outfit is as steeped in values of the past as they are keen on keeping things fresh for today's listening ear," while Bluegrass Today recognized how "The Storytellers bridge the gap between the traditional bluegrass and jamgrass worlds and have become known for their grassy covers of Grateful Dead songs."
Their momentum continued with a year-long 2022 residency at Treasure Island Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, establishing the band as a mainstay at several distinguished venues. In 2023, The Storytellers made history as the first bluegrass-style band to perform on one of NAMM's premier stages.
The Storytellers are Scott Diehl (Guitar, Vocals), Lance Frantzich (Bass, Vocals), Tyler Emerson (Fiddle, Vocals), David Burns (Banjo, Vocals), and Steve Stelmach (Washboard, Percussion).
