Set in 1930s Salzburg, Austria, “The Sound of Music” (1965) follows Maria, a lively and free-spirited postulant at Nonnberg Abbey who struggles with the constraints of convent life. To help her mature, the Mother Abbess sends her to serve as a governess for the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a widowed naval officer who runs his household with military precision.
Initially met with resistance from the children, Maria wins them over with her warmth, creativity, and love of music. Through songs like “Do-Re-Mi” and “My Favorite Things,” she transforms the rigid atmosphere into one of joy and connection. As Maria and the Captain grow closer, they fall in love and eventually marry, forming a united family.
However, their happiness is threatened by the rise of the Nazi regime. When Captain von Trapp is ordered to accept a commission in the German Navy, the family chooses to flee Austria rather than support the Third Reich. In a dramatic climax, they escape over the mountains to Switzerland, guided by faith, courage, and the enduring power of music.
The film, directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, is based on the true story of the von Trapp Family Singers. It remains one of the most beloved musicals of all time, celebrated for its iconic score by Rodgers and Hammerstein, breath-taking alpine scenery, and themes of resilience, love, and moral conviction.
