At 23, TJ Sawyerr has already built a career spanning modeling, creative direction, image-making and conversational journalism. Working with the likes of Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, A$AP Rocky, André 3000 and Bukayo Saka as well as brands including Dr. Martens, Adidas, Converse and Calvin Klein, Sawyerr built a practice rooted in Black cultural storytelling. But behind the big names and big opportunities is a much more interesting question: how do you actually build a coherent creative career when you have more ideas than boxes to put them in?
Cultural Currents is a conversation series where Stephanie Afrifa invites local and international talents who, like a steady tide, shape the cultural landscape and push creative boundaries. During this edition Afrifa and Sawyerr explore what it means to follow your curiosity instead of choosing a lane, build a creative life around your many ideas and turn unexpected opportunities into a career that feels like your own.
